What Actually Happens When You Scan a VahanTag — A Step-by-Step Walkthrough

You Spotted a QR Sticker on a Car — What Now?

You're in a parking lot. A car is blocking yours. Or you noticed the headlights are on, or there's something wrong with the tyre. The car has a small QR sticker on the windshield. You've never used one before. Here's exactly what happens when you scan it.

Step 1 — Point Your Phone Camera at the QR Code

No app needed. Open your phone's default camera — the same one you use to take photos — and point it at the sticker. On both Android and iPhone, the camera automatically detects the QR code and shows a notification banner or link at the top of the screen. Tap it. You're taken to a webpage in your browser within 2–3 seconds. No download. No sign-up. Nothing to install.

Step 2 — You See the Vehicle's Contact Page

The page loads and shows you the car's details — the vehicle number (like MH12AB1234) and the owner's display name (e.g. "Rahul's Car"). You do NOT see the owner's phone number anywhere on this page — that's the point. You see a set of reason buttons to choose from:

• Car is blocking me
• Headlights are on
• Tyre looks flat or damaged
• Something urgent / emergency
• Other

Select the one that applies.

Step 3 — Optional: Leave a Short Message

After selecting the reason, you can optionally type a short message — "Please move your car, blocking gate" or "Your rear tyre looks very low." This is entirely optional. If you don't type anything, the owner still gets a notification with the reason you selected.

Step 4 — You Hit Send

You tap the send button. The page confirms the alert was sent. That's it. Your part is done. The whole process from scan to send takes under 15 seconds.

What the Owner Experiences

The moment you hit send, the car owner receives:

• A WhatsApp message from VahanTag's system number. The message includes the reason you selected, your optional message if you added one, and the time of the scan.
• An SMS to their registered number as a backup.

Their phone number was never shared with you. They can choose to come move their car, or respond however they like — but that's between them and their vehicle. You've done your part.

What About the SOS / Emergency Option?

If you select the SOS or Emergency option, the flow is different. Instead of just notifying the owner, VahanTag immediately sends the vehicle's live GPS location to the owner's pre-set emergency contacts — up to 3 people — via WhatsApp and SMS simultaneously. This is designed for accident scenarios where the owner may be injured and unable to use their phone. A bystander scanning the tag is enough to trigger a location alert to the owner's family. No app, no account needed from the scanner's side.

Does the Scanner Ever See the Owner's Number?

No. At no point during the scan flow does the owner's phone number appear on screen. The contact is routed through VahanTag's system. The scanner has no way to retrieve or extract the owner's number from the QR code or the webpage. This privacy layer is the core design principle of VahanTag — the owner is reachable, but not exposed.

Can the Owner See Who Scanned Their Car?

The owner sees the reason for the scan, the time and location of the scan, and any message left by the scanner. They do not automatically receive the scanner's phone number either — the system is designed to be anonymous for both sides unless the scanner voluntarily includes contact details in their message.

What If the Car Doesn't Have a VahanTag?

Then there's no easy way to contact the owner. You're left with waiting, honking, asking nearby people, calling traffic police (which can take 30–45 minutes), or using the government VAHAN portal — which won't give you the owner's phone number anyway. VahanTag exists precisely to fill this gap. It's a 15-second solution to a problem that otherwise has no good answer.
